EPA Mandates Amalgam Separators

Most Dentists Required to Comply by 2019

The Environmental Protection Agency issued a final rule Dec. 15, 2016, that will require most dentists in the U.S. to install amalgam separators. The rule follows the ADA’s best management practices and is supported by the ADA as being a fair and reasonable approach to managing dental amalgam waste.

The rule goes into effect Jan. 15, 2017, but most dentists will have three years to come into compliance. Some oral health providers are also exempt from the rule.
